America's 50 Most Amazing Wine Experiences

Celebrity-winemaker sightings happen almost daily at this Sonoma County spot. To sip Merry Edwards's extraordinary Pinot Noir while sitting next to Merry Edwards is a rare experience. Underwood is also popular for chef and co-owner Matthew Greenbaum's bistro dishes, like Hereford Ranch burgers. ”

Getting Away From It All - Graton's Underwood Bar & Bistro is a step back in time

Walking into Underwood ... is like traveling back to old-time San Francisco: Think Sam's, Tadich or the Washington Square Bar & Grill. The menu features a large tapas and small-plate section, and the food has a European sensibility... The milk-glass pendant lights hanging from the ceiling look nabbed from a Depression-era bank; the nickel-topped bar looks as if it could have been in a saloon. Zinc inserts also dress up each dining table, set in front of Bentwood chairs and red vinyl banquettes. After a day in the country, it's a very civilized place to taste a few wines and have a leisurely meal.”

Into the Underwood - How the bistro business, bobos, feng shui, and George Segal got to Graton

At the Underwood at 9pm, the bar is crowded and there isn't a free table in the dining room. Three hours later, at midnight... the place has thinned out, but the party isn't over yet. Customers are still drinking and eating. Some of them will stay until 2am. That late-night closing time on Fridays and Saturdays adds to the mystique of the place and has already made it a destination on the restaurant circuit in the North Bay.”

Wine, Dine & Deal

The main menu offers such delightful starters as oysters (including two of my favorites, Kumamotos and Malpeques) and a smoked trout and watercress salad. Among the worthy main courses are the roasted duck breast, Moroccan-spiced chicken and a Catalan fish stew that mixes clams, mussels, calamari and prawns.”
